History

The founding committee for a university in the eastern Westphalian room was set up in late 1965. Bielefeld University was conceived by the sociologist Helmut Schelsky and founded in 1969 as a so-called " reform university " where interdisciplinary work was a stated goal. This is already in the architecture, in the central hall, all the faculties are also connected to each other spatially. The teaching began in November 1969 with three faculties - mathematics, law, sociology.

For the university system were first newly constructed building at the Kurt- Schumacher-Straße (near Bültmannshof ) available, which were then used by the college. Other rooms had to be rented at various locations in the city.

In 1976, the central main building of the university was completed by planning a few years earlier had fled from the GDR architect Peter Kulka, which consists of a large hall and rear buildings for the individual faculties. With its 154,000 square meters of floor space ( floor area approximately 410 meters long, 230 meters wide ) is the main building of the Bielefeld University one of the largest contiguous university buildings in Europe.

As one of the first universities nationwide put the Bielefeld University in the winter semester 2002/2003 the majority of the courses on offer, including teacher training, to the Bachelor and Master system has to offer. As part of the Excellence Initiative, the University received a grant for the construction of a cluster of excellence for human- machine communication entitled " Cognitive Interaction Technology" and a graduate school, the " Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology ."

Even before a statutory provision for NRW a comprehensive smoking ban was introduced from 1 May 2007 in the premises of the university.

Rehabilitation

Currently find extensive construction and renovation measures with an investment of over one billion euros instead. Under construction are, inter alia, to a replacement building for the departments of sociology and history with a library and a new central refectory (completion expected in spring 2014). On the subsequent newly built " North Campus " and the Fachhochschule Bielefeld is from 2013/14 in addition to a research building " Interactive Intelligent Systems " resident. After commissioning of the replacement building, the complete renovation of the main university building to begin. For this purpose, a time frame of over 10 years is provided ( as the completion date of 2025 is called ). Want to keep the central hall as a communication center and access to lecture halls, library etc. façade and main entrance will be redesigned, gutted the individual parts of buildings, building services and energy supply completely renewed. The building is currently considered PCB - loaded, however, a risk is deemed not given, there are regular examinations instead. For transport development of the new buildings already made an expansion of the light rail station Wellensiek planned is also an extension of this line to at least the castle road.

Faculties

The Bielefeld chemist Achim Müller received in 2012 for his work with the " Advanced Grants " of the European Research Council ( ERC), one of the world's major research awards for his work in the field of artificially generated wheel-shaped giant molecules.

At the Faculty of Education founded by Hartmut von Hentig experimental schools and sixth-form college laboratory school are connected.

The science of history in Bielefeld also has an international reputation, not least through co-founded by Hans -Ulrich Wehler and Jürgen Kocka " Bielefeld School " of social history. Also be mentioned here is Reinhart Koselleck, who was one of the best-known historians in postwar Germany.

The philosophical department counts with a focus on analytical philosophy and famous lecturers (such Beckermann, von Savigny, Bittner, carriers and Wolff) of the nation's most significant.

Founded in 1994, the first independent faculty of health sciences in Germany is structured along the lines of American " professional schools ". It aims at the interdisciplinary approach and lays its emphasis on vocational usable basic research. The Bielefeld School of Public Health is one of the largest research institutions in this specialized field in Germany and WHO Collaborating Centre. The faculty members are active in numerous committees and commissions at the federal level. It provides, inter alia, two members of the Advisory Council on the Assessment of Developments in health care.

At the mathematical faculty, three of the world's outstanding representatives of their specific disciplines (for group theory, algebraic topology and information theory ) worked with Bernd Fischer, Friedhelm Waldhausen and Rudolf Ahlswede. Reinhard Selten worked at the Institute of Mathematical Economics and has an interdisciplinary orientation to collaborate with biologists and mathematicians used to advance his game theory work. In 1994, Rare was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics. Also at the Faculty of Mathematics of the Leibniz Prize winners Thomas Zink is active.

At the University of Bielefeld since 1969 exists nationwide first and only Faculty of Sociology. It is a unique institution in the German higher education landscape, as at any other university, the compartment has sociology on institutional autonomy of a faculty. The Bielefeld Faculty of Sociology represents one of the greatest scientific institutions of the discipline in Europe

Also, call the Technical Faculty, which, for example, by the working group " Knowledge Based Systems " to Ipke Wachsmuth or Neuroinformatics computer science to Helge Ritter, in 2001 the Leibniz Prize, among other distinguished. Created in 2007, CoR-Lab ( Cognition and Robotics ) not only got the first university research center of Europe from the company provided two Honda ASIMO robot is available, but also encourages young scientist with a graduate school in the field of Cognition and Robotics.

In recent years, the studies Latin, Catholic Theology, Romance Studies, Eastern European Studies and Geography were closed to focus on externally- strong subjects.

In this organized as part of the teaching program in sports science compete about 35 ten teams over a distance of 10 km against each other.

Night of the sounds

Each year in June, has been held since 2004, the night of the sounds, in the spread over the whole university buildings occur ( from the swimming pool to the dining hall, from the basement to the 10th floor ) musical groups of various kinds. On the first Wednesday of the semester each semester takes place the biggest student party of the semester with more than 10,000 guests in the west end of the central Unihalle. It is organized by students of the Student Council of Economics ( Wiwi ).

Tuition

On the basis of the Act to ensure funding equity in higher education ( HFGG ), the Tuition Fee Act of 16 March 2006 the Senate of the University of Bielefeld has decided in its meeting on 12 July 2006 for the first time a study fee statutes, in the study's contributions to the length of the already completed studies were staggered. The different sizes of tuition fees violated but after a ruling of the Administrative Court Minden June 1, 2007 against the conditions established in Article 3 of the Basic Law principle of equality. Therefore, a new transition on Tuition Fees (10 July 2007 ) was adopted on July 4, 2007. This states that tuition fees in the amount of 350 euros for all students in the winter semester 2007/ 08 were collected up to and including the summer semester 2009. At the meeting on February 4, 2009, the Senate of the University has confirmed the amount of the tuition fees of 350 euros, so in the winter semester 09 /10, those rules were unlimited. The NRW state parliament has approved the abolition of tuition fees and their replacement by appropriate state funds for higher education with the votes of the SPD, the Greens and the Left on February 24, 2011. Since the winter semester 2011/2012 no more tuition fees.

As tuition fees should be introduced at the University of Bielefeld in the winter semester 2006/ 07, many students protested and occupied the rector's office and the Unihalle for one month each. Numerous groups and individuals, for example, Konstantin Wecker, then showed solidarity with the protesting students. Furthermore, there were large protests, such as the traveling exhibition that started in the University of Paderborn and has now been passed over Bielefeld to Munster. The cast, however, was also among the students controversial: While many students shared the negative attitude of the occupiers against tuition fees, but doubted in view of the university structures on the effectiveness of the occupation. A survey conducted by the student council and the StuPa ballot voted about 94 percent of those voting against the introduction of tuition fees at the University of Bielefeld and thus gave the student responsible at the political level backing. The turnout was 22.4 percent. These are about 10 % more than the annual elections to the student parliament.

In July 2006, students stormed the Senate meeting for formal Beschließung of tuition fees, while an employee of the General Security Service, a key to the main university building was stolen. The students should be prevented by multiple " rings " of the Security Service, attend the public meeting. In the weeks after the Senate meeting multiple toilets in the university buildings and the private car of the Rector Dieter Timmermann were alleged use of the master key, among other offenses damaged by arson, as well as offices and facades of private residences of professors smeared with feces - the police investigated, inter alia, against a employees of the Prodiac security service of the University. The theft had the master key cost of several hundred thousand euros a result, since the locking system had to be partly replaced.
