Big Walter Price

Big Walter Price (* as Walter Travis Price August 2, 1914 in Gonzales, Texas, † March 8, 2012 in Houston, Texas ) was an American musician (piano, vocals) and Songwriter of the Texas blues.

Life and work

Walter Price was raised by his aunt up and left with eleven years his home and moved to San Antonio, where he fought with various jobs before he came in the 1940s with the music scene in touch. He began writing songs and learned to play the piano. In the 1950s, he made his first recordings; Bob Tanner label TNT in San Antonio, he played a three singles, which appeared in 1955. The first record was calling Margie, which was released under the band name Big Walter and his Thunderbirds, which earned him the additional name The Thunderbird. The end of 1955 he moved to Houston and participated in recordings of Clarence Gatemouth Brown for the label Peacock, who were 1956/57, published and successful. For the label he took, inter alia, on the singles Shirley Jean and Pack Fair And Square / Hello Mary, accompanied by members of the Little Richard Band, The Upsetters ( Grady Gaines, Clifford Burks, Nat Douglas ). The latter song was covered in the 1970s by the J. Geils Band and Nine Below Zero.

In 1958 Price recorded two singles for the label gold ribbon in Lake Charles ( Louisiana) to San Antonio / Crazy Dream and Oh Ramona. In the 1960s he took for various small labels on records, but were not successful. During this time, Price worked in a strip club in Houston. He went further than musicians, led a record store and the music publishing Dinosaur, he also worked as a disc jockey for the local transmitter KCOH and entered as the black Zombies of Sugar Hill (1974 ) in films. In the 1980s, been published so far unreleased recordings from Big Walter Price on LP.
