As Birnlücke ( 2665 m above sea level. A. ) is called the border pass at the west end of the Hohe Tauern, between the Venedigergruppe and the subsequent Zillertal Alps. About the transition since 1919, is the boundary between Austria and Italy. In regional meet here Salzburg and Tyrol, Krimml Achen Valley and Campo Tures, or the Rieserferner Ahrn and the National Park Hohe Tauern each other.

Up to the Schengen Agreement, there was here, as well as at the transition Krimml Tauern ( 2634 m ), regular border controls.

Not far south of the border crossing, at 2441 m asl, is the built in 1900 and named after the border pass Birnlückenhütte ( Rifugio Tridentina ) the Italian Alpine Club, Section Brunico.

Name

The name Birnlücke is caused by corruption of the old notation. Even in 1888 was named the pass Pyrlücke, under the old name Pirra waters or Birlbach in Ahrntal. The Italian name is Forcella del Picco.

History

Together with the Krimml Tauern is the Birnlücke a common path from one valley to another, which is divided into two parts only momentarily on the crest by the Klockerkarkopf. The use of both passports goes back to the Stone Age. The mineral wealth of the area was the local passports to get a certain importance and this was probably the whole Middle Ages and the beginning of modern times like this. Only then it lost its significance, a possible cause could be the decline in ore prices, which occurred after the discovery of America.
