Bishop's Stortford

Bishop's Stortford is a city in England with about 35,000 inhabitants. The city is located in the county of Hertfordshire, about 50 kilometers north-east of London. Here is the administrative headquarters of the district of East Hertfordshire. A few kilometers east of the town is the airport London Stansted.

History

The Romans built a small settlement on the Stane Street, the Roman road between London and Colchester. The settlement was abandoned after the fall of the Roman Empire. Later in its place was a settlement of the Anglo-Saxons. When the Domesday Book was written in 1086, the site had around 120 inhabitants. The addition of " Bishop's " he received because he was in the Middle Ages in the possession of the Bishop of London.

The development of the town was favored by the presence of roads, the nearby River Stort and the implementation of a weekly market. After 1769, the river was made ​​navigable, shortly after the town was a stop on the stagecoach line between Cambridge and London. In 1828, Bishop's Stortford received a corn exchange. The Malthouse was the most important industry. The railway was opened in 1842.

In 1901, the population was 7000 and rose within fifty years to 13,000. Growth in the second half of the 20th century was even more pronounced. The opening of the M11 motorway and Stansted Airport, contributed to the fact that Bishop 's Stortford increasingly fell into the catchment area of Greater London and is now a commuter town.

The new city center in the middle of the historic center offers an architecturally appealing building complex in glass and brushed stainless steel look. Opened in May 2007, it houses the new Sainsbury superstore and a branch of the fashion label NEXT.

Twinning

Bishop's Stortford decided in November 2011, the twinned with Friedberg ( Hessen) and exit Villiers -sur -Marne on 28 September 2012. Marco Evers suggested in an article in Spiegel Online, the current political debate about Britain's role as a trigger behind it.
