Bishopric of Naumburg-Zeitz

The Diocese of Naumburg - Zeitz is a former diocese in central Germany between Leipzig and Erfurt in the east to the west. Seat of the bishop was 968-1029 Zeitz with the Zeitz Cathedral and 1029-1615 with the Naumburg Naumburg Cathedral. It was dissolved as a result of the Reformation.

The old diocese Zeitz was founded 968.

At the suggestion of the Emperor Otto approved by Pope John XIII. at the synod of Ravenna 967 the establishment of the three bishoprics of Meissen, Merseburg and Zeitz bishopric (later Diocese of Naumburg ). All three bishoprics were suffragans of the archbishopric of Magdeburg.

The Diocese of Naumburg - Zeitz included the four Archdiakonate Naumburg, Zeitz, Altenburg and " trans Muldam " (consisting of the sub-districts Lichtenstein, Glauchau, Hartenstein and Loessnitz ).
