Pope John XIII

John XIII. (* In Rome, † September 6 972 ibid.) was Pope from October 1, 965 to 972, he was Roman, but perhaps did not come from the house of Crescentii, as claimed in some sources.

After the Otto I. supported Pope Leo VIII died, he was chosen at the behest of the emperor and in the presence of the imperial envoys Bishop Liutprand of Cremona and Otger of Speyer. He was related to Alberic II - possibly the son of Theodora the Younger, the sister of Marozia - and possibly came from the family of Crescentii that could significantly extend their power in Rome in his tenure. Before his pontificate, he was 961-965 Bishop of Narni and librarian of the Roman Church.

Throughout his tenure, he stood on the side of Otto I. Because of his authoritarian style, he fell during a riot kaiser hostile factions at times in captivity, from which he eventually escaped. After the emperor arrived for the fourth time in Rome, this held a hard, but bloodless court. The Emperor presented the Papal States restores and enlarged the Patrimony of St Peter also. Then he expelled Adalbert of Ivrea, who had risen for the last time, to Corsica, where lost its tracks.

The pope crowned on 25 December 967 the son of Emperor Otto, Otto II, as co-emperor. Thus, the father wanted to secure the succession to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire. 967 he rose at a synod in the diocese of Magdeburg to the archbishopric of Ravenna. This diocese was the starting point of a new slave mission. On April 19, 972 John XIII took place. the marriage of Otto II and the Byzantine princess Theophano. Through the collection of Capua and Benevento to archdioceses but it increased tensions with the Eastern Church, as both cities until then were under Byzantine influence.

John XIII. died September 6, 972 in Rome.
