Black Eye Galaxy

Messier 64 (also known as NGC 4826 and Blackeye Galaxy ) is a spiral galaxy with dimensions of 10 ' 0 x 5 ', 4 and the apparent brightness of 8.5 mag in the constellation Coma Berenices. It has a large oval dark cloud to the north of the core with an extension of about 8000 light years and a size of 9.2 × 4.6 arcmin, which is probably formed by fusion with a small, very dusty galaxy. The approximately 24 million light-years distant galaxy was previously performed as a member of the Canes Venatici - I group, in more recent sources but it is attributed to a small private group. She was discovered by Edward Pigott in March 1779 by Johann Elert Bode matter in April of the same year, as well as by Charles Messier in 1780.

Discovery

The galaxy Messier 64 was discovered on 23 March 1779 by the British astronomer Edward Pigott in Wales, but the published his observation until two years later. This first Johann Elert Bode was regarded as explorers, who discovered this independently of Pigott 12 days later. In the Messier catalog it was recorded a year later.

William Herschel first noticed the dark spot north of the core, who later took the name "Black Eye" earned the galaxy as the galaxy Herschel the British physicist Charles Blagden showed that compared it with a black eye.
