BMW N46

The BMW N46 is a straight four cylinder gasoline engine of the car manufacturer BMW, he replaced the N42. The N46 had its debut in the 2003 3-series ( BMW E46 ) and was offered in the same year in the E87 120i.

In developing the N46, the focus in the fine-tuning of the engine, without major design features relative to the N42 have been changed. The following modules have been changed here:

  • Balance shafts
  • Connecting Rods
  • Spark
  • Vacuum pump
  • Roller cam
  • Cylinder head cover
  • Use of DME Bosch MEV 9.2 with integrated Valvetronic control unit

In addition, the N46 compared to its predecessor was now fuel- quantity-regulated also in full load operation via the lambda probes. The lowered at full load operating fuel economy and improved exhaust emissions, the carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx ) and especially of benzene, which has been shown to be carcinogenic.

2006, the N46 was again modified ( inter alia with the DME Bosch MV17.4.6 ) and offered as N46N. This is sold in some markets in which makes impossible an increased concentration of sulfur in the fuel, the use of the N43.

In addition, the engine without Valvetronic is used as the N45 with 1.6 and 2.0 liters.
