With external dimensions from 4.53 to 4.58 meters, the 3 Series is about as long as the Mercedes -Benz C-Class, but shorter than the Audi A4. Compared to its predecessor E46 saloon is longer by almost two inches. The wheelbase grew by 35 millimeters. In addition, the E90 is now 78 millimeters wider. With regard to pedestrian protection also the hood is set higher.

Equipment

All models come standard with air conditioning, four electric windows, radio with CD player, MP3 compatibility and six speakers, trip computer and a six-speed manual transmission. For an additional charge, a six-speed automatic is available ( standard on 335d ).

With imported into the ongoing series in September 2007, BMW EfficientDynamics measures comes with the four-cylinder models with manual transmission, a start -stop system used.

The six-cylinder models can be distinguished from the four cylinders by chrome elements ( for example, the vertical bars in the kidney of the radiator grille and the window frame, from March 2009 available at extra cost for four-cylinder models ), dual exhaust and are equipped with active cruise control ACC (Active Cruise Control) available. Only the two top models 335i and 335d are each equipped with an exhaust tailpipe on both sides of the rear of the vehicle. In addition, the ESP has in the six- cylinder models five additional functions ( brake stand, brake drying, hill start assist, Fading Compensation and Soft Stop ).

From September 2008, the 320d xDrive (next to 330d, 325i, 330i and 335i ) was available. He thus reached by the end of 2010, only the Euro 4 emissions standard (excluding xDrive: EUR 5). From the beginning of 2011, he met the Euro 5 emissions standard

Technology

Motors

All 3 series ( except M3, here's a V8 is used ) have inline engines with four-valve technology. The engine range has been completely revised and reduced to a few basic models, with the result that even less than before the model designation indicates the actual displacement:

316, 318 and 320 ( Petrol and diesel) engines are four-cylinder with a displacement of two liters. The larger models have six-cylinder engines with three liters of displacement, where the different services can only be achieved through coordination and charging, the 335d for example, by turbocharging.

The same shall apply from 1 September 2007 for the petrol engines 325i and 330i. Both are based on an aluminum - magnesium engine block with three liters of displacement, the difference in performance between 325i and 330i with a modified injection control is effected. Launched in September 2006 335i ( N54 engine) has an almost identical displacement, but is based on an engine block made of solid aluminum. It provides with two turbochargers ( Biturbo ) and piezo direct a maximum torque of 400 Nm.

At the same time, a new six-cylinder diesel was introduced with the 325d. In the revision of the 335i engine is since the N55 engine only a turbocharger but with twin-scroll technology used.

Since March 2009, " Performance Power Kit " is available for the 335i, which boosts engine power by a further 15 kW to 240 kW. At the same time the maximum torque increases to 450 Nm. Since March 2010, a " Performance Power Kit " is available for the 320d, which boosts engine power by 15 kW to 145 kW more (but this is possible only on the models from March 2007 with 130 kW engine power). The increase in output includes the 320d another control device, a larger intercooler and a more powerful fan. On vehicles with automatic or the torque converter is replaced. Furthermore, the torque rises by 40 Nm to 350 Nm to 390 Nm of.

  • All petrol engines with manifold injection are equipped with double - VANOS with Valvetronic. The 335i has two turbochargers ( Twin Turbo).
  • Valvetronic eliminates the 320si and since September 2007 in all six-cylinder inline ( with the exception of the 335i as of March 2010 ), the latter due to the direct fuel injection.
  • The direct gasoline injection engines are the first passenger car engines in series, the feature spray-guided direct injection. This should enable a stratified charge in a wider range of the characteristic map, than the previously realized in series to air and wall-guided direct petrol injection method.
  • The common-rail diesel engines are equipped with VTG turbocharger and intercooler; also have the four-cylinder engines in the 318d and 320d to improve the acoustic and vibration comfort two balance shafts. Since 2006, a diesel particulate filter is standard. The 335d has to cover a wide speed range, a sequential turbocharging with two series-connected VTG turbochargers ( Variable Twin Turbo ) different size.

Transmission

  • 6 -speed manual transmission
  • 6- speed automatic transmission ( manufacturer: ZF )
  • 7- speed dual- clutch transmission

The dual clutch transmission is available for the 335i in coupe and convertible since September 2008. Thus, the standard consumption is reduced by 0.3 liters.

Steering, suspension and brakes

In all versions, electromechanical power steering is standard. An optional Servotronic ( speed-sensitive steering assistance ) or the Active Steering is offered. The car has a turning circle of 11.0 meters. In conjunction with the xDrive, this increased to 11.8 meters.

In the design of the front and rear axle, BMW chose each a different way: the produced lightweight multi-link rear axle of steel and a double-joint spring strut front axle with aluminum components. The rear axle is (each side) from five arms, where special attention was paid to the corrosion protection. Three of the arms are made of galvanized steel; the camber control arm of the rear axle was treated with a Tauchverzinkung. In this way, the rockfall exposed chassis parts are largely resistant to corrosion. The front suspension consists of a double-joint spring strut aluminum lightweight construction with a strut. The two separate elements of the tension strut and wishbone enable a virtual pivot point in the lower link plane that is outside of the components.

As standard, all models feature a rear-wheel drive. The ground clearance is 144 mm for the sedan in conjunction with the standard suspension. When M sports suspension lowered by 15 millimeters is effected.

The brake system is working the front with vented single-piston calliper disc brakes with a dependent of the engine diameter of 292 mm to 348 mm. Rear brake discs come with diameters ranging from 300 mm to 336 mm are used. In the six cylinders they are internally ventilated.

Security

The BMW E90 have beside ABS with Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control, belt tensioners, an ESP with traction control system ( BMW Dynamic Stability Control DSC or Dynamic Traction Control DTC called ), also six airbags ( Fahrer-/Beifahrer, two side airbags and through curtain airbags ). Since September 2008, active front head restraints are fitted as standard, which should reduce the risk of whiplash injuries in a rear impact. When Euro - NCAP crash test, the car received in the assessment of occupant safety five stars out of five (35 points ) and with child safety Four Stars ( 39 points). The pedestrian safety has been evaluated with four points and a star.

Child seats can be attached to the back seat safely only on the outer seats. There are also Isofix mountings are available. For the passenger seat Isofix bracket and switchable airbag cost charge.

Callbacks

On 13 July 2012, the Federal Motor Transport Authority published a call back to the models of the BMW 1 and 3 Series and X1 SUV and Z4 sports car. Affected are the model years 2007 to 2012 level due to a fault in the control electronics of the electro-mechanical power steering. ( Electro-pneumatic circuit; EPS) and leads to failure of the power steering.

Environment

The term BMW EfficientDynamics several technical innovations are summarized, which cause less fuel consumption at the same time increasing performance.

All petrol engines are, in this context, the spray-guided direct injection ( High Precision Injection ) is inverted. The 335i reaches the EU4 emission standard; from March 2009 to reach the 318i and 320i the EU5 emission standard, 325i ( xDrive ) and 330i ( xDrive ) since September 2009. Due to the used in Euro 5 vehicles in the NEDC test cycle fuel with higher ethanol content (E10 ) and thus lower energy density increases the nominal consumption by 0.1 liter ( 325i ) to 0.5 l ( 318i ).

Diesel models come standard with a particulate filter since autumn 2006. The 318d, 320d ( without all-wheel drive system xDrive ) and 330d (with or without xDrive ) reach the Euro 5 emissions standard; the 320d xDrive and 335d only the standard Euro 4 As of March 2010 all engines keep the Euro 5 emissions standard one. For the 330d (saloon; since September 2008) and 320d ( Sedan, Touring and as of March 2010) without automatic transmission, a Blue -performance filter is also available, which reduces by a storage catalytic nitrogen oxide emissions and thus compliance with the Euro 6 standard possible.

Sedan / Touring

Engines

As of September 2005, there were major customers for a "Fleet Edition" of the 320d with 110 kW and 340 Nm instead of 120 kW of the standard model. With the introduction of the new common- rail turbo-diesel in the 320d with 130 kW Fleet Edition now made 120 kW, the torque of 350 Nm compared to the standard model remained the same.

From spring 2008 the M3 was offered again as a sedan, which was last seen in the series E36.

Came in March 2010, the 320d - EfficientDynamics Edition (only available as a sedan ) with 120 kW instead of 135 kW ( 380 Nm of torque remained the same) on the German market. As a buyer expected mainly BMW fleet customers as well as ecologically -minded driver.

Mid-2010, followed ( again for large customers ) a modified "Fleet Edition" of the 320d ( as a sedan and station wagon ) with 120 kW and 380 Nm instead of 120 kW and 350 Nm of Fleet Edition of 2007. The maximum speed of the fleet was Edition at 6 km / h lower and acceleration from 0-100 km / h took 0.5 seconds longer. The values of fuel consumption (4.7 l/100 km) and CO2 emissions (125 g / km) corresponded to the version for private clients.

As of spring 2011, the EfficientDynamics Edition is also available for the Touring.

At the same time replaced the BMW Twin Turbo engine in the 335i by a single turbo with twin-scroll technology.

Facelift

In September 2008 sedan and Touring were revised. Compared to previous changes in other BMW models, the changes were in the E90 and E91 from relatively extensive.

Design

In addition to the changes to front and rear aprons, the hood received two so-called character lines. the mirrors were a European standard designed correspondingly larger. The headlights now have a matte bezel above the reflectors, the rear lights are now L-shaped. In addition, the BMW kidney grille was redesigned ( elimination of the chrome strip on the hood ) and the lateral lines optically stretched slightly.

The interior now come higher-quality materials and trim are used, also some control elements were changed.

Technology

In addition to the widening of the track and the use of LED bulbs (for the turn signals and tail lights ), the front seats were equipped with crash-activated headrests. The xenon headlights can be extended with a variable light distribution.

Technical modifications were also the optional " navigation system Professional ," which has been provided with an internal hard drive and now Harman -Becker (formerly Siemens VDO) is delivered. In addition, the new generation of BMW iDrive including Internet access held (optional) feeder.

Motors

The motors of the 330d was changed, the now 180 kW (245 hp) ( previously 170 kW/231 hp). To reduce nitrogen oxide emissions is for the 330d and the storage catalyst " Blue Performance " offered. This means that the model improves on the EU 6 standard. Furthermore, the engine of the 335i was changed in the course of facelifts: Man reduced the two separate turbochargers to one, but it includes two scroll wheels ( twin-scroll technology). Thus, the 335i now meets the Euro 5 standard (previously: € 4). Consumption fell in this way with the same performance by about 1 liter and the torque curve was now more evenly.

The 320d is now available with xDrive.

Prices subject to change

The basic prices of all models were indeed slightly raised. Through several special features, which have now been included in the standard equipment, the price increase compensates almost. However, the prices of many options available increased.

Technology

Circuit and transmission

Due to an integrated shift lever in the strain gauge must not be coupled during switching operations. This triggers an electrical pulse as soon as the driver presses against the lever. Thus the ignition is hidden by the engine control. The pulling force of the engine is briefly interrupted and the driver can switch with light pressure without a clutch.

It is installed a five-speed racing transmission with straight-toothed, unsynchronized gear wheels and H circuit.

Steering and brakes

The rack and pinion steering with electro-hydraulic power assistance comes from the production model. However, the steering ratio in the racing version is more direct.

The 320si WTCC has front ventilated and perforated disc brakes made of cast iron and aluminum calipers with four pistons. The discs have a diameter of 332 millimeters and 32 millimeters thick. Rear ventilated disc brakes are also fitted with a diameter of 291 millimeters and twin-piston aluminum brake callipers.
