Bob Attersley

Robert Allan "Bob" Attersley ( born August 13, 1933, Oshawa, Ontario, † March 12, 2010 in Ajax, Ontario ) was a Canadian politician and hockey players.

Career

A native of Oshawa Attersley began his sporting career with the Oshawa Generals. In the season 1952/53, Attersley was the most valuable player of the Ontario Hockey League and won the Red Tilson Trophy as such.

Later he played for three seasons for the Whitby Dunlops. During this time the team among other things, in 1957 the Allan Cup and won in 1958 World Ice Hockey Champion. Winning the World Ice Hockey Championship presented as the climax in Attersley career and did much to his later popularity. This is based, among other things, that Attersley scored the winning goal in the final against the USSR in Jordal Amfi in Oslo.

1959 won the Whitby Dunlops Allan Cup again the and thus earned the right to represent Canada at the Olympic Winter Games in 1960 in Squaw Valley, but which they refused. Instead, the Kitchener- Waterloo Dutchmen Canada, participated in these Winter Games. The Kitchener- Waterloo Dutchmen offered Attersley on then to play in their team. Attersley accepted the offer and the team won the silver medal.

Political career and death

After finishing his sports career Attersley began to become politically active. From 1980 to 1991 he was mayor of Whitby, and thus held the longest tenure in the history of the city.

Attersley died after a brief illness on March 12, 2010. His funeral took place on March 17. Among other things, took the Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, who was a good friend of Attersley part in this.
