Bobby Broom

Bobby Broom ( born January 18, 1961 in New York City as Robert Broom, Jr.) is an American jazz guitarist and music educator.

Life and work

Bobby Broom began with 13 years to learn guitar, first played folk, then he worked with jazz when he studied with jazz guitarist Jimmy Carter in Harlem. He attended the High School of Music and Art and performed in clubs in New York with Al Haig and Walter Bishop Jr.. In 1977, he played at a concert in Carnegie Hall for the first time with his future mentor Sonny Rollins. Subsequently, he studied at the Berklee School of Music (1978 /79), then returned to New York to complete his studies at the Long Iceland University. He also worked with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Dave Grusin, Hugh Masekela and Tom Browne, until he got a record deal with GRP Records.

The mid-1980s he moved to Chicago, where in 1990 he formed the Bobby Broom Trio; In 1999 followed the Deep Blue Organ Trio, with whom he presented a series of recordings under his own name at Delmark, Arista, Criss Cross Jazz, Fantasy and Origin Records, beginning with the trio album Stand! (2001 ), on which he recorded interpretations of 60s/70s pop and soul classics. At present (2012 ) is his band from Chris Foreman ( organ) and Greg Rockingham (drums).

In addition, Broom has worked as a music educator since 1982, first in collaboration with Jackie McLean at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford. He was also a lecturer at the American Conservatory of Music (1986-1990), the Chicago Musical College - worked Roosevelt University (1990-1994), the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz ( 1987) and at DePaul University ( 2002-2008 ). Currently, he teaches for the Ravinia Festival Organization in the program Music In The Schools / Jazz Mentor Community Outreach Program and the Thelonious Monk Institute.

Bobby Broom has also worked throughout his career with Ronnie Cuber, Robert Irving III, David Murray, Max Roach, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Garrett, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Charles Earland, Dr. John, Kenny Burrell, Eric Alexander, Ramsey Lewis and Sadao Watanabe. Currently, he plays in a trio with Ron Carter and Golden Stryker Mulrew Miller.
