Bonegilla, Victoria
Bonegilla is a small village with 773 inhabitants in the northeast of the Australian state of Victoria. It is located about ten kilometers from Wodonga and about 300 km from Melbourne.
History
The Post Office of Bonegilla was opened on 20 August 1878, closed in 1951. The military office Bonegilla was from 1940 to 1947 and from 1983 to 1998 in the place of which it was transferred back to the nearby Bandiana.
The development of the town was line -dependent, which was opened in 1889 and closed in 1981 by the Cudgewa railway. The railway line was used in the Bonegilla Migrant Camp of the Station Pier on Port Melbourne for transporting building materials to the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system and of immigrants. The railway line was dismantled and a portion is now used as a bike and hiking trail, the High Country Rail Trail, which runs from Wodonga to the end of Lake Hume.
Bonegilla Migrant Camp
The Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre served after the end of the Second World War, the reception of immigrants after their arrival. The operated from 1947 till 1971 Bonegilla Migrant Camp was the largest and longest -run camp for immigrants in Australia and there is about 1.5 million immigrants stopped temporarily on.
