The quarter-final between Brazil and France went down in the annals of World Cup history as an offensive spectacle. Both teams played from the start on a goal. Brazil went through a combination Josimar, Müller and Junior by Careca lead. Platini equalized just before the break. Despite the enormous heat the game was in the second half on a high level. Substitute Zico awarded for a foul on Branco 15 minutes before the end of regulation time a penalty. In the extension no team was able to score a goal. So had to decide a penalty shootout. On the Brazilian side forgave Sócrates ( Bats parried ) and Júlio César ( bar), with the French only missed star midfielder Platini (through the gate). The reigning European champions France moved into the semi-finals. Brazil failed again at its plans to bring the fourth title.
