Brian Magee

Brian Magee ( born June 9, 1975 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland ) is a British professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA super middleweight.

Amateur career

He was the 1992 and 1993 Irish junior champion in the light middleweight division as well as 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 Irish champion at middleweight. He participated in the Junior World Championships in 1992 in Montreal and the Junior European Championships in 1993 in Thessaloniki, where he lost to Yevgeny Makarenko.

At the World Championships in Berlin in 1995, he lost against the reigning European Champion Dirk Eigenbrodt. At the European Championships in 1996 in Vejle, he reached the quarter-finals, but was beaten then Jean -Paul Mendy of France. Moreover, in August of the same year he started at the 26th Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he entered victories against Randall Thompson from Canada and Bertrand Tietsia from Cameroon to the quarter- finals. The semi-finals and thus the sure win a bronze medal he missed by a defeat against Mohamed Bahari from Algeria.

In September 1997 he won with impressive victories the Muhammad Ali Cup in Louisville. He defeated while Malik Beyleroğlu ( silver medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games ), the reigning U.S. champion Jorge Hawley and subsequent professional world champion Jeff Lacy.

In May 1998 he won the silver medal in the middleweight division at the European Championships in Minsk. He had it prevailed against Robert Gerrits from the Netherlands, the later military world champion Harald Geissler from Germany and the Russians Dmitry Strelchinin before he only lost in the final Zsolt Erdei from Hungary. In June of the same year he was able to reach the quarter-finals at the World Cup in Beijing, where he lost to Sayed Ebrahim Moosavi from Iran.

In September 1998 he took part in the 16th Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, where he successfully fought a bronze medal in the middleweight division and then became a professional.

Professional career

After eleven victories against build up opponents, including ten by KO, he was in January 2001 in Peterborough with a points win over Neil Linford ( 11-2 ), Intercontinental Champion IBO super middleweight and then still beat Chris Nembhard (6-1 ) early in the sixth round. On 10 December 2001, he won in London, the IBO World Championship at super middleweight. He thereby achieved a knockout win in the first round against Ramón Arturo Britez ( 32-12 ).

After a win against the following structure Vague Kocharyan, he was the championship belt against then Mpush Makambi ( 23-7 ), Jose Spearman ( 19-4 ), Miguel Ángel Jiménez ( 21-2 ), Andre Thysse (14-1 ), Omar Eduardo González ( 25-4 ), Hacine Cherifi ( 34-8 ) and Jerry Elliott ( 37-3 ) defend. In his eighth title defense on 26 June 2004 in Belfast, he lost his IBO belt by a point defeat to Robin Reid ( 36-4 ), he also had four times against his opponent to the ground.

After another victory against Neil Linford, he pushed on July 16, 2005 in Nuremberg by the EBU European Super Middleweight against the Ukrainians Vitali Tsypko ( 17-0 ). However, Magee defeated it just by points ( split decision ). After two following structure victories, he fought on 26 May 2006 in London by the British and Commonwealth champion in Super Middleweight against Carl Froch. It Magee went in the first round to the ground, while Froch suffered a hand injury and also a cut- infringement of which contributed with a goal in the fourth round under his right eye. In the eleventh round Magee went through a hard uppercut Ko and thus suffered his first defeat premature.

Magee then moved to the light heavyweight division, defeating Paul David (5-1 ), Andrew Lowe (16-1 ) and Danny Thornton ( 21-12 ). On 25 August 2007, he tried the British Championship title in this weight class against Tony Oakey ( 24-2 ) to secure, but reached only a draw which Oakey titleholder remained. After three more victories against construction opponents at light heavyweight, he pushed on December 13, 2008, at the British Masters title at super middleweight against Stevie McGuire (14-0 ) and won by KO in the eighth round.

In his very next fight, on 30 January 2010 at Aarhus, Denmark, he was able to secure through a knockout win in the seventh round against Mads Larsen ( 51-2 ) for the vacant European title EBU super middleweight. Previously, he had the Danes already three times on the ground. In August 2010, he defended the title in Dublin early in the eighth round against Roman Aramyan ( 30-8 ) from Armenia.

On 19 March 2011, he grew as a challenger in the current IBF titlist Lucian Bute ( 27-0 ) in Montreal in the ring, but lost prematurely due to a precipitate in the tenth round. But just four months later he secured in Costa Rica by points win over Jaime Barboza ( 17-4 ) interime the WBA world at super middleweight and defended it in February 2012 in Denmark by Ko in the fifth round against Rudy Markussen ( 37-2). On November 1, 2012, he was finally appointed as the new regular without a fight WBA champion after Károly Balzsay but had been stripped of his title.

Barely a month later, he lost the championship belt already on December 8, 2012 ahead of Mikkel Kessler ( 45-2 ).
