Bridewell Palace

Bridewell Palace, also Bridewell Royal Hospital, in London, was originally a residence of King Henry VIII and later became a poorhouse and prison. The name Bridewell later became synonymous with police stations and prisons in England and Ireland.

The palace was built on the site of the medieval St. Bride 's Inn for Henry VIII, who lived there from 1515 to 1523. Situated on the banks of the River Fleet, he is named after a nearby, dedicated to St. Bride fountain. Here the papal delegation met in 1528 in the run-up to discuss the divorce of the king of Catherine of Aragon. The building was a pet project of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and abandoned by the king after Wolsey's fall in 1530. From 1531 to 1539 it was leased to the French Ambassador.

1553 handed Edward VI. the palace of the City of London for the reception of homeless children and the punishment of " disorderly women". From 1556 the palace was used as a prison as well as a hospital and school, for which the term Bridewell Royal Hospital naturalized.

The name Bridewell was later taken to other prisons in London, including Clerkenwell Bridewell (opened in 1615) and Tothill Fields Bridewell in Westminster. Similar facilities in England, Ireland, Canada and the United States received as a result also the name of Bridewell. In general, the term refers to the main detention facility of a city or region, which is typically near a courthouse.

In the Great Fire of London in 1666, the palace was largely destroyed in 1667 and partially rebuilt. 1834 moved to the prison in a nearby building near Francis Street. 1863/64, Bridewell was demolished. The school moved its location to Surrey and changed its name to King Edward 's School, Witley.
