Bright Lights, Big City (film)

Bright Lights, Big City is an American melodrama of James Bridges from the year 1988. The film is based on the 1984 bestseller published Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney.

Action

The aspiring writer Jamie Conway draws from rural Kansas to the big city of New York. There he slowly loses control of his life, loses his job and gets dumped by his wife. So he seeks distraction in the nightlife. Together with his friend Tad he celebrates many nights in clubs, drinking alcohol and taking drugs.

In flashbacks, the audience learns how his mother's death has upset the young Jamie. It is clear that he has this calamity still not been overcome and therefore fled from his hometown. Since he professionally and personally failed in New York, he tried to numb his pain with drugs and alcohol.

Background

  • The story was adapted in 1999 by Paul Scott Goodman as a musical.

In 2009 it was announced that the director Josh Schwartz is planning a remake of the film.
