Bruno Tommaso

Bruno Tommaso ( born 1946 in Rome ) is an Italian bass player, arranger and composer of the Modern Creative Jazz. Since the 1970s, he is one of the leading musicians of the avant-garde in Italy.

Life and work

Bruno Tommaso is a cousin of bassist Giovanni Tommaso and is considered one of the most creative arrangers and orchestra leader of Italy. He is the first chairman of the Association of Jazz musicians in Italy and was in 1990 one of the founding members of the Italian Unstable Orchestra. Tommaso played with numerous musicians from the jazz scene in Italy, Giorgio Gaslini like, Enrico Rava, Mario Schiano, Franco D' Andrea, Eugenio Colombo and Enrico Pieranunzi. Since 1981, he took under his own name, a number of albums, including for the jazz label Splasc ( h), on.

His works include the plate Su Un Tema Di Jerome Kern and a film soundtrack for the eponymous film Steamboat Bill, Jr. by Buster Keaton. He also acted as arranger; he arranged opera arias for Enrico Rava ( Rava L'Opera Va, 1993 and Carmen, 1995 - appeared on Label Bleu ), and Gianluigi Trovesi ( Around Small Fairy Tales, 2001). In Italian Unstable Orchestra, where he is on friendly terms even after his retirement, he managed the recording of his title as " I Virtuosi di Noci " ( on the album Live in Noci, 1995) and "Il Maestro Muratore " (on Skies of Europe, 1994).

Tommaso worked as artistic director and arranger with the Gruppo Romano Free Jazz. He also played a suite for improvising soloists and orchestra, Nux Erat (CMC, 1994), in which also Pino Minafra, Gianluigi Trovesi and Evan Parker participated. In Il Diritto e il Rovescio (Siena Jazz, 1996), used Tommaso texts of the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino who were murdered in Sicily by the Cosa Nostra for their activities against organized crime. He taught at the Conservatory of Naples, where he led an orchestra with singer Maria Pia De Vito, with the album Oltre Napoli la Notte (2000) was born.
