Mario Schiano

Mario Schiano (* July 20, 1933 in Naples, † May 10, 2008 in Rome ) was an Italian jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer of free jazz. He belonged since the late 1960s, one of the leading musicians of the jazz avant-garde in Italy.

Schiano applies after Jazzpodium as one of the initiators of free jazz in Italy. His model was first Charlie Parker. He was in 1967 in Turin founder of the band Gruppo Romano Free Jazz, which existed until the mid-1970s; it was originally a trio with bassist Marcello Melis (1939-1994) and drummer Franco Pecori and was then treated with Giancarlo Bruno and Tommaso Schiaffini ( who came for Melis in the band ) expanded to a quartet. Their recording " If Not Ecstatic We Refund " from the 1970 counts as a manifesto of the independent scene in Italy. His subsequent productions big band of the 1970s, which successfully contributed saxophonist Massimo Urbani, later appeared on the album " Sud" ( Splasc (h)), his few recordings of the 1980s, including with Irène Schweizer, Paul Lovens and his " Action Trio" with Giorgio Gaslini and Bruno Tommaso on the compilation " Meetings" ( Splasc ( h), 1980-93 ). In 1990 he was a founding member of the Italian Unstable Orchestra, a regular member of the formation to 2003 and participated in the production of all albums until 2004. Since the early 1990s he worked on numerous projects, including own with Bill Dixon, Evan Parker, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Joëlle Léandre, Ernst Reijseger, Peter Kowald, Paul Rutherford, Phil Wachsmann, Ernst- Ludwig Petrovsky, Famoudou Don Moye and Barry Guy together.

In addition Schiano worked in the herkommenden of new music ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva improvisation and Nuova Consonanza with. Under his aegis, the artistic Controindicazioni Festival in Rome developed over two decades into one of the most important free jazz events in the country. As a side instruments played Schiano soprano saxophone, organ and SHEKERE.
