Bruthen, Victoria

Bruthen is a small town on the Tambo River in eastern Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. It lies between the cities Ensay and Bairnsdale on the Great Alpine Road. At the 2006 census, the population was found to be 624. The distance to Bairnsdale is 26 kilometers to the west and 311 km to Melbourne.

History

Bruthen is a word of the Aboriginal tribe of Brabiralong, part of the Kurnai, the long, wooden point bedeutet.Alfred Howitt stated that the correct name for the area around Bruthen was Murloo (German: Pipe shale).

The famous discoverer of Gippsland, Angus McMillan, pulled on April 14, 1840 on his way from Omeo through the area, located in the Bruthen today. The first post office at the location was opened on 15 January 1862, the first school in 1872

On November 27, 1958 Avon Sabre fighter aircraft of the RAAF crashed on to the outskirts of Bruthen, where he missed the densely populated city area just barely. Flight Lieutenant Ralph Oborn flew from New South Wales to the RAAF base in Sale, when his machine caught fire. Oborn saved himself with the ejection seat at a height of 150 m above ground and was only slightly injured. He was the first who pulled the ejection seat of an aircraft in Australia.

Facilities

Bruthen is a small shopping center with grocery trade, bakery, post office, hotel, gas station and a few shops and cafes. There are also police station, an emergency department, a fire station, several churches, a cemetery and a primary school.

There used to be a railway line with a train station east of the city. The station, a railway tunnel and a railway bridge over the Tambo River, the Storer Bridge remained as part of a cycle path along the disused railway line.

Events

The Bruthen community offers some of the events over the year: the Mixed Bag - art exhibition, village markets ( every 4th Sunday of the month ), dances of the parishes and the Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival on the 3rd weekend in February. The mentioned above, 96 km long East Gippsland Rail Trail ( bike path on the old railway line ) from Bairnsdale after Orbost through Bruthen and offers excellent opportunities for cycling, walking and horse riding.

Sports

The Bruthen Football Club (Australian Football ) plays in the Omeo & District Football League ( OFDL ) and has the nickname "The Bulldogs ". The club has won since the beginning of his league participation in 1978 six championships, 1979, 1984, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 2003. Attached is the Bruthen Netball Club.

The colors of Bruthen are red / white / blue. The football players wear red and white rings on a blue background and the ladies of the Netball Association blue blouses and red skirts.

Also, tennis, cricket and bowls is played in Bruthen and there are gun clubs.
