Bryophryne cophites in moss with eggs

Bryophryne is a genus of frogs and toads of the family Craugastoridae. The genus was erected in 2008, when the genus Phrynopus had to be divided into several classes due to molecular genetic studies. Type species of the genus is Bryophryne cophites, formerly Phrynopus cophites. All species of this frog species are located in southern Peru.

Features

A characteristic feature of the genus is a narrow head, which is never as wide as the body. Six of the species described so far do not Tympanalmembran, the corresponding cavity ( cavum tympanicum ) is missing in the skull bones of this region, as well as the columella ( ossicles ). The males of most species have no glottal sound and no bubbles.

The first finger is shorter than the second, the third and fifth toe are equally long. The head-body length of up to 29.3 mm, so it is very small frogs. Your coloring consists of various shades of brown.

Distribution and habitat

The species can be found in the cloud forests of the Peruvian Andes. It comes in the Cordillera Oriental in the province of Cusco at an altitude 2900-4120 meters in front. As of 4000 meters above sea level, the cloud forest is separated from the grasslands of the puna. Geographically, the distribution of the genus Bryophryne from that of the related genus Phrynopus, which is also native to Peru, separated by the deep valley of the Río Apurimac.

Way of life

The genus Bryophryne belongs to the group of Terrarana, which are South and Central American frogs, which undergo direct development on land without a tadpole in the water. The development to finished young frog takes place within the egg.

Species

In addition to the type species Bryophryne cophites and in 2007 discovered species Bryophryne bustamantei that were both originally counted to the genus Phrynopus, there are six more, in recent years, newly discovered species.
