Buffalo is a city in Leon County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located halfway between Dallas and Houston off Interstate 45 and halfway between Austin and Tyler on U.S. Highway 79 and has a total area of 10.5 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

1993 and 1994, the city changed its name to Blue Star, Texas during the Super Bowl season in support of the Dallas Stars against the Buffalo Sabres at the final weekend of the Stanley Cup. Both times, won the Dallas Stars. In 1999 the city changed its name to the same event in Green Star, Texas.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 1804 people in 668 households and 474 families. The population density was 173.3 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 71.40 % White, 14.80% Black or African American, 0.06 % Native American, 0.55 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 11.59 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.61% were of mixed descent, and 17.02 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 668 households 37.6 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.5 % were married couples living together. 18.4% were single mothers and 28.9 % were non-families. 25.9 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size to 3.16 persons.

29.8 % of the population were under 18 years old, 10.5 % from 18 to 24, 25.0 % 25-44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 83.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,625, and the median income for a family $ 31,058. Males have a median income of $ 28,807 versus $ 17,083 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,246. 23.5 % of the population and 21.1 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 31.3 % have children under the age of 18 and 21.9 % of those 65 or older.
