Bumbești-Jiu

Bumbeşti -Jiu is a town in Gorj County in Romania.

Geographical location

Bumbeşti -Jiu is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, between the foothills of the mountains to the west and Valcan parang in the east, both sides of the river Jiu ( German Shield ). The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 20 km south.

History

On the territory of the present town are the remains of three Roman fortifications dating from the 2nd century. Since the 14th century the monasteries Lainici and Visina are attested. A document from 1514 mentions Bumbeşti as possession of the monastery Visina.

Bumbeşti -Jiu was originally a smaller, shaped by agriculture and livestock village. Since the beginning of the 20th century and through the web connection, the establishment of industries, which consisted mainly in wood and stone processing began. In quarries of marble and granite were promoted. In 1989, Bumbeşti -Jiu city status.

Other important economic activities in the city are the arms and metal industries, food processing, power generation and agriculture. At present ( 2009) is planning the Romanian energy company Hidroelectrica the construction of a hydroelectric power plant, which is scheduled for completion by 2012.

Population

As of the 2002 census, lived in the town of 10,617 people, including 10,329 Romanians and 272 Roma.

Traffic

Bumbeşti -Jiu has since 1916 connected by train to Târgu Jiu and was for several decades terminus of this railway. 1924 one took the elaborate construction of the line in the mining area of the upper Schiltals ( Petrila, Petrosani, Lupeni ) in attack, which lasted, with interruptions, until 1948. Current passing through Bumbeşti -Jiu railway line serves mainly the transport of goods (coal). Also, the passenger is of importance; currently operate in both directions (2009) about four quick - and six local trains. A total of six stations are located in the area of the city. The express trains stop in Valea Sadului station. In addition, bus services in the district capital Târgu Jiu. Through the city runs the European Route 79
