Calibrachoa

Calibrachoa sp.

The Calibrachoa is a genus of the nightshade family (Solanaceae ). The hybrid Calibrachoa × hybrida 'Double Ruby " was named the balcony plant of 2012 Rhineland- Palatinate.

Description

Calibrachoa are small shrubs or herbaceous plants with woody stem axis, growing annual or perennial. The leaves are ovate, elliptic, obovate or linear; its edge is flat or rolled back.

The inflorescences are composed monochasial and have to constantly stand, foliage leaf-like bracts on. The flowers are usually zygomorphic, the buds cover is reziprokativ in most species, the only exception in both cases is Calibrachoa pygmaea. The calyx has five or ten ribs, he is usually lobed to about the middle, the lobes are usually narrows toward the tip. The crown is like a funnel, only in Calibrachoa pygmaea is salverform, bulbous, tapering towards the tip. The color of the crown can purple be red, pink or whitish. The anthers are yellow.

The fruits are capsules. The seeds have a net-like surface. This structure is due to the seed surface is perpendicular to the walls that are straight in all species.

The chromosome number is 2n = 18

System

Outer systematics

The genus Calibrachoa is traditionally classified within the scheme of the nightshade family in the tribe Nicotianeae and there in the subtribe Nicotianinae. Molecular biological studies have shown, however, that the Calibrachoa not with the kind of tobacco (Nicotiana ) can be grouped into a common clade. In the scheme of family after Richard Olmstead in 2007, the genus is classified together with the Bouchetia, Brunfelsia, Fabiana, Hunzikeria, Leptoglossis, Nierembergia, Petunia and Plowmania in a designated as Petunieae clade.
