Capafonts

Capafonts is a mountain village in Catalonia in the region of Baix Camp, which is known for its forests and its water of crystallization.

Location

The village is located 36 km from Reus and 140 km from Barcelona. Near the village is the town of Salou and the theme park Port Aventura.

History

From the founding of the village until the 20th century had Capafonts a feudal system: First, it was owned by the Count of Prades and later the estate and Großgutbesitzer. This also had the whole village and the territory involved.

Breakfast time

Human presence in Capafonts Valley goes back to the Epipalaeolithic and to the Neolithic Age, as some caves and fossils suggest in the area. The population, which lived between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age in Capafonts, was probably a nomadic people who settled there.

Antiquity

Finds, which date back to the ancient times, suggest that people were also present at that time. Such finds are, for example, pieces of pottery and frühiberische coins from the 2nd century AD, and the remains of a Roman town. Apparently, the Visigoths were present in this environment later.

Early Medieval

In the 11th century, the political administration Capafonts was in Siurana. Capafonts was the refuge of persecuted Christians, to 1159 settled there. From the year 1151, the political administration of the village was handed over to Barcelona; the name Capafontes appears in the document for the first time. This situation was an end in 1324, when the county Padres by James II in favor of his only son Alfonso IV founded.

Late Middle Ages

In 1425 the county Cardona took over the government of the village, at the end of the 16th century the Duchy of Medinaceli and later to the Duchy of Feria.

Modern

The story Capafonts differs in that time barely out of the history of the wider area.

1860 Capafonts had the highest population density since the birth. At that time counted Capafonts 532, in 1900 422 and 1950 292 inhabitants.

Economy

Throughout the history of the agriculture was the dominant sector, which can be explained by the vegetation. The forests in the area provided enough food (herbs, hunting and fishing).
