Caparica is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Almada and thus belongs to the district of Setúbal in the region of Lisboa. In the municipality of 20,447 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011), at 11 km ². The administrative headquarters is located in the town of Monte de Caparica.

Geography

The community Caparica is limited in the north by the River Tagus, on the west by the municipalities Trafaria and Costa da Caparica, on the east by Pragal and in the south by the municipalities and Sobreda Charneca da Caparica. The community should not be confused with the neighboring Costa da Caparica ( beach ); the city has no beach by the sea, but it can be bathed in the Tagus. The place was collected on 27 September 1985 Vila, the city's official name Monte da Caparica received ( the name of a town in the municipality in order to distinguish themselves from neighboring Costa da Caparica ).

History

The history of the town dates back to Roman rule. Caparico would have had a similar value for the Romans as Alcochete, Montijo or Sesimbra because these places were crossed. The community was founded in 1472 by a papal bull of Sixtus IV.

Place name

The word Caparica derives apparently from the Latin Cappar, cappari or capparis from, which in turn comes from the Greek kapparis and Kaper means. So Caparica would have been an important place for capers. According to experts, the Latin derivative is the most probable, however, it is possible that the name comes from the Arabic al - Kabbara, which in turn comes from Latin.
