Laranjeiro is a municipality in the west of Portugal. Laranjeiro belongs to the district of Setúbal in Almada, has an area of 3.88 km ² and has 20,823 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011 ).

Geography

The town lies on Mar da Palha, the delta of the River Tagus, and belongs to Margem Sul do Tejo.

History

Since the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal and the handover to the Order of Santiago by King Dom Sancho I in 1186, the present-day municipality was always alternating the owner under which various religious and illustrious knight like Nuno Álvares Pereira were. It was divided into smaller and smaller areas on possession until King Dom João IV in 1641 began to take territories from back in royal possession. Since February 7, 1928 Laranjeiro belonged to the municipality of Cova da Piedade, until it became an independent municipality on October 4, 1985.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

The palace Palácio do Alfeite (also Paço Real do Alfeite ) from the 17th century goes back to a house dating from the 14th century, and today houses the naval headquarters for the Lisbon region. It is a listed building.

In Laranjeiro in the 1990s, monuments to the Solidarity ( Monumento à Solidariedade ) and brotherhood ( Monumento à Fraternidade ) have been prepared, plus a decorated with azulejos marble monument in keg form ( Conjunto Escultorico Alusivo ao Barril D' Alva ) to commemorate the efforts and achievements of the local population.

The mansion Quinta de Santo Amaro from the 19th century shows classical features on the façade and in the interior, especially in the azulejos. It houses among others today a Youth Cultural Centre and is a historical monument since 2001.

The stadium Estádio Municipal José Martins Vieira situated in the municipality. The football fourth division from neighboring Cova da Piedade plays its home games from here.

Economy

The public transport company Transportes Sul do Tejo is located here, as well as some industrial enterprises. The Portuguese Navy has a branch here its most important bases, the Base Naval Alfeite do.

Traffic

Tram lines 1 and 2 of the Metro Sul do Tejo perform Laranjeiro.

About the N10 national road connecting the community has with the A2 motorway.
