Trafaria is a municipality in the west of Portugal. Trafaria belongs to the district of Setúbal in Almada, has an area of 5.73 km ² and has 5724 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

Geography

The community is an urban metropolitan area Margem Sul do Tejo (German: south bank of the Tagus ) counted. Located on the northwest corner of the peninsula of Setúbal, where north of the Tagus River enters the Atlantic Ocean, the site is characterized by shallow marshland, beach and dunes. Afforestation have been made to protect the dunes, but also the land.

History

Originally believed to be a fishing village, a hospital was opened in 1565 here. Some fortifications bear witness to the strategic importance of the place, at the entrance of the Tagus River Delta, the gateway to the capital Lisbon.

On January 24, 1777, the village was burned to the Marquês de Pombal command, as many young men hid here from military service. After the town was rebuilt. 1873 here is a dynamite factory was opened.

On October 7, 1926, the municipality ( Freguesia ) of Trafaria was created, and on 26 September 1985, the location of the Vila was charged.

Economy

Fishing is, in spite of lower importance, is still a significant factor, especially the mussel fishing. In addition to various companies in the manufacturing industry, trade, and social institutions are still the tourism and the facilities of the Portuguese Navy, which their ships waiting here of importance.

Traffic

The community is on the ferry Transtejo, public transport ( bus lines), and reach the highway connecting the A38.
