Carangas (Oruro)

Carangas is a village in the department of Oruro in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

Carangas is the central place of the district ( bolivian: Municipio) Carangas in the province of Puerto de Mejillones. The village lies at an altitude of 3876 m on the Rio Kholana, a tributary of the Río Sabaya, which drains to the salt lake Salar de Coipasa out.

Geography

The climate in the region is semi-arid, the annual rainfall is only 200 mm (see climate chart Sabaya ). From April to November the dry season with monthly values ​​of less than 10 mm of rainfall, the humidity in the summer time is short and the rain not very productive. The annual average temperature is about 7 ° C without significant variations during the year, but with considerable daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent freeze-thaw cycles.

The vegetation in the region corresponding to the semi-arid Puna. It is treeless and is composed mainly of thorn bushes, grasses, succulents and cushion plants. It is economically used as a llama, alpaca and sheep pasture.

Traffic network

Carangas is located 230 kilometers by road south-west of Oruro, the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro leads the largely unpaved Ruta 12 highway about 189 km in a south-westerly direction over Ancaravi and Huachacalla to Sabaya and on to Pisiga to the Chilean border. In Sabaya branches off a dirt road leads off to the west and another 41 km along the Río Sabaya about La Rivera to Carangas.
