La Rivera

La Rivera is a village in the department of Oruro in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

La Rivera is the administrative seat of the province of Puerto de Mejillones and central place of the district ( bolivian: Municipio) La Rivera. La Rivera lies at the mouth of the Rio Mocomocone in the headwaters of the Río Sabaya at the foot of a hundred meters high round mountain, 40 kilometers north-west of the salt lake Salar de Coipasa.

Geography

The climate in the region is semiarid and has a humidity in the summer time, the annual rainfall is 400-500 mm. The average annual temperature is 8 ° C without significant variations during the year, but with considerable daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent freeze-thaw cycles.

The vegetation in the region corresponding to the semi-arid Puna. It is treeless and is composed mainly of thorn bushes, grasses, succulents and cushion plants. It is economically used as a llama, alpaca and sheep pasture.

La Rivera is located 221 kilometers by road from Oruro, the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro leads the largely unpaved Ruta 12 highway about 189 km in a southwesterly direction over Ancaravi and Huachacalla to Sabaya and on to Pisiga to the Chilean border.
