Carl Enckell

Carl Johan Alexis Enckell ( born June 7, 1876 in Saint Petersburg, † March 26, 1959 in Helsinki) was a Finnish politician, officer and diplomat. He was the first representative of the independent Finland in Saint Petersburg.

He was educated at the Hamina Cadet School and then served as an officer in the Imperial Russian Army. In 1917 Enckell negotiated in St. Petersburg in the role of Finnish foreign ministers and representatives of the Finnish Senate on the independence of his country.

He was a representative of Finland to the newly founded League of Nations. During the Åland crisis he reached the whereabouts of the islands in Finland in conflict with Sweden.

He was Foreign Minister of Finland in the years 1918-1919, 1922, 1924, and from 1944 until 1950. From 1919 to 1927 he was Ambassador of Finland in Paris. He then worked as a banker to enter again in 1944 in the diplomatic service.
