Casa de las Américas

Casa de las Américas (House of America ) is a Cuban cultural institution. It was founded on April 28, 1959 by Haydée Santamaría, the director of the center until her death in 1980. Self-imposed task is to promote the socio-cultural exchange between artists from Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

The Casa de las Américas is the founder of various awards, including literature, musicology, composition and theater.

In addition, the Institute is the editor of the cultural journal Casa de las Américas, revista de letras e ideas.

The Directors, Haydee Santamaría were, among others Mariano Rodríguez (1980-1986), Roberto Fernández Retamar (1986 to 1989) and Arturo Arango (1989 to 1991).

For their work, the Casa de las Américas in 2004 was awarded the Simón Bolívar Prize from the UNESCO.
