Castillejo de Martín Viejo

Castillejo de Martín Viejo is a small West Spanish municipality ( municipio ) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile -Leon.

Location

Castillejo de Martín Viejo is located in the water-rich but rocky hills in the west of Spain, along the border with Portugal. The beautiful city of Ciudad Rodrigo is located about 15 kilometers southeast.

Demographics

In the second half of the 19th century up to the year 1960, the place was always around 1000 inhabitants.

Economy

Due to the stony and therefore difficult to work the soil agronomic yields are low; animal husbandry and dairying therefore play a greater role. Due to the mechanization of agriculture, the population of the town has declined sharply in the second half of the 20th century.

History

Not much is known about the history of the small town. About two miles to the west along the Rio Agueda are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site by Siega Verde petroglyphs. In the Islamic era the area was depopulated. In the 11th and 12th centuries it was repopulated during the reconquest of formerly Christian territories ( reconquista ) of immigrants from the Christian north, but also from the south of Spain ( repoblación ).

Attractions

  • The in 16-17. Built century parish church has a masonry brick bell tower ( espadaña ).
  • The prehistoric drawings in the canyon of the Rio Agueda are almost inaccessible.
  • In the vicinity of Castillejo de Martín Viejo, there are some old stone bridges.
