Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes

Caudiès -de- Fenouillèdes ( Occitan: Caudièrs de Fenolhet ) is a southern French village with 634 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Pyrénées- Orientales in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Location

Caudiès -de- Fenouillèdes is located in a valley of Fenouillèdes, about 54 km ( driving distance ) north-west of Perpignan. Saint -Paul -de- Fenouillet, the capital of the canton is, a good eleven kilometers to the southwest. Until the imposing castle ruins of Puilaurens there are about seven kilometers to the west.

Economy

In Caudiès -de- Fenouillèdes as in the wooded area of the entire Fenouillèdes Agriculture and Forestry is operated to a limited extent. The rental cottages ( gîtes ) plays an important role in the economy of the small community.

Caudiès -de- Fenouillèdes is one of the approximately 125 municipalities, which may market their wines under the appellation Cotes du Roussillon AOC.

History

The first written mention of the village dates from the year 852 In the Middle Ages the site of a castle ( Castel- Fizel ) was ruled that Viguerie also served as the seat of the administrative and judicial district.

Attractions

  • The late gothic pilgrimage church of Notre -Dame-de -Laval is located in stunning surroundings on a hill above the village. It was built in the 15th century on the site of an old hermitage ( hermitage ). On the way from the village to the church is a chapel with a figure of the Holy Family and an archway with two monolithic columns and reused Romanesque capitals; above this is a Madonna with Child from the 15th century. The nave interior of the pilgrimage church is covered with a ribbed vault. Behind the altar is a carved altarpiece with scenes from the life of Mary.
  • The ruins of Castel- Fizel located about two kilometers from the city and about 150 meters above the road.
