The Cayman Islands Dollar is the currency of the Cayman Islands. He has been published since a change in the law in January 1997 by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority ( CIMA ). The CIMA replaced since the Cayman Islands Currency Board, which was established in 1971. The Cayman Islands Dollar was circulated in May 1972. The ISO 4217 code is KYD.

Historical

Until 1863 to 1876, was exploited in the Cayman Islands to the U.S. dollar, then the silver dollars. Also, the pound sterling was the official currency. Well one hundred years, 1870-1972, the Jamaican currency was used for payment. First, the Jamaican pound and in 1969 the Jamaican dollar.

After the introduction of the Cayman Islands Dollar and the Jamaican dollar was the official currency in 1972, a transitional period until 31 August.

The Cayman Islands Dollar is subject according to an agreement with the World Bank a fixed exchange rate of 1 Cayman Islands Dollar equal to 1,227 U.S. dollars, which claims 1.2 U.S. dollars. In exchange offices on the island, however, it is usually traded on an exchange rate of 1:1.25.

Banknotes and coins are currently in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 cents and 1, 5, 10, 25, 40, 50 and 100 dollars in circulation.
