Chandpur District

The district Chandpur ( Bengali: চাঁদপুর জেলা, Cādapur Jela Jela Chandpur ) is an administrative unit in southeastern Bangladesh, which lies within the Division Chittagong.

The 1704.06 km ² large district is bordered to the north by the neighboring districts Kumilla and Munsiganj and east again to Kumilla. The districts of Noakhali, Barisal Lakshmipur and lie to the south and the river Meghna and the districts Shariatpur and Munsiganj lie on the western flank Chandpurs.

The main streams are the Meghna and the Padma, which unite near the district capital of Chandpur.

Chandpur was created in 1878 as an administrative subunit of the district of Tripura. Within the administrative system of Bangladesh Chandpur is an independent district only since 1984. It is administratively divided into seven so-called Upazilas: Chandpur Sadar, Hajiganj, Kachua, Faridganj, Matlab, Haimchar and Shahrasti. Within this administrative subdivision, there are six self-governing city councils ( municipalities ), 87 Union Parishads (village councils) and 1226 villages.
