Changshu
Changshu (常熟 市) is a county-level city in the east of the People 's Republic of China. It belongs to the administrative territory of the prefecture-level city of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, and is located near Shanghai. Changshu has an area of 1266 km ² and about 1.0431 million inhabitants ( 2004).
Location
20 km south of the Yangzi River, 72 km north- west of Shanghai, 50 km north-east of the borough Canglang (沧浪 区), so the city of Suzhou.
Administrative Divisions
At the community level, Changshu is composed of ten major communities. These are:
- Greater community Yushan (虞山镇), center, seat of the city government;
- Greater community Meili (梅 李 镇);
- Greater community Haiyu (海虞 镇);
- Greater community Xingang (新 港镇);
- Greater community Guli (古 里镇);
- Greater community Shajiabang (沙家浜 镇);
- Greater community Zhitang (支 塘镇);
- Greater community Dongbang (董 浜 镇);
- Greater community Shanghu (尚 湖镇);
- Large village Xinzhuang (辛庄 镇).

At the census in 2000 1.239.637 inhabitants were counted in Changshu.
History
540 AD was independent Changshu County, 581 but it was the city of Suzhou subordinate. In 1295 it became the seat of a prefecture, was renewed and fixed in 1300, but in 1370 it was downgraded again to the level of the district. In 1950, the city of Changshu was newly established in 1958 but converted back into a circle. On January 18 in 1983, the current county-level city of Changshu was founded.
Culture
At least three famous painters were born in Changshu:
- Huang Gongwang (1269-1354), one of the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty
- Wang Hui (1632-1717), one of the " Four Wangs " representing the orthodox school of painting during the Ming and early Qing Dynasty
- Wu Li (1632-1718), a representative of the orthodox school of " literati (?) Painting " in the early Qing Dynasty
