Chariez

Chariez is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chariez situated at an altitude of 275 m above sea level, about 6 km west of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the central part of the department, in a westward to the valley of Durgeon opening trough at the foot of the heights, which rise between the river valleys of the Saône and Ognon.

The area of ​​7.66 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the hills between the Saône in the north and in the south Ognon. The central part of the area occupied by the depression of Chariez. This is dewatered to Durgeon by the village brook to the west. The western part of the municipality is relatively weak in relief and occupied by the approximately one kilometer wide valley of Durgeon. The valley is on average 215 m and is used mainly for agricultural purposes. Beyond the Durgeon Valley extends the area on the plateau of Montigny (up to 240 m).

The trough of Chariez is surrounded to the north, east and south of a plateau that slopes abruptly to the trough. The top of the hill is crowned at different locations of crags and projections. While in the trough sandy- marly layers of the Lias are pending, there is a plateau of limestone sediments of Middle Jurassic time. In the north of the trough, the plateau of the Camp de César is located ( 386 m ) in the south that of the Grand Bois de Lessus. To the southeast of this plateau rises the wooded crest of the Bois de Noidans, on the 426 meters, the highest elevation of Chariez is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Chariez are Montigny -lès- Vesoul in the north, Vaivre -et- Montoille and Noidans -lès- Vesoul in the east, Andelarre and Mont -le- Vernois in the south and Pontcey in the West.

History

The territory of Chariez was already inhabited in prehistoric times. On the strategically well-protected projection of the Camp de César was already in a Paleolithic settlement site.

In the Middle Ages Chariez belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The noble family of the same name became extinct in the 14th century. Since the Middle Ages Chariez formed a parish. Also, the Order of Malta and the family Vergy owned land in the area. Over time Chariez was repeatedly affected: 1360 by the Grandes Compagnies, 1475 by the troops under Craon and 1477 by the House of Lorraine. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Chariez is a member of the 19 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes de l' agglomà de Vesoul.

Attractions

The Church of Chariez was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. It has a rich interior, including statues (16th century) from Burgundian School, a crucifix (17th century), and furnishings from the 18th century. From 1855 comes the chapel Notre Dame de la Salette. Additional attractions include a stone cross on the village square, the former seat of power, various wineries and farmhouses dating from the 15th to the 18th century in the traditional style of the Haute -Saône and a country house (18th century) of the Jesuits of Vesoul.

Population

With 222 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Chariez one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 510 persons were still counted ), only relatively small fluctuations were recorded since the mid- 1970s.

Economy and infrastructure

Chariez was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. The formerly significant viticulture is now virtually disappeared. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomeration Vesoul.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes. The main access is from the Department of D13 road that leads from Vesoul by Fresne -Saint- Mamès. Another road connection with Andelarre. Chariez has a railway station on the now disused railway line from Vesoul to Gray.
