Charles Coghlan (politician)

Sir Charles Patrick John Coghlan (* June 24, 1863 in King William 's Town, South Africa; † August 28, 1927 ) was the first Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia. He held the office from 1 October 1923 until his death on 28 August 1927.

Coghlan came in 1900 to Rhodesia in Bulawayo and practiced as a lawyer. He supported the renewal of the British South Africa Company and worked against the union with Northern Rhodesia and the Union of South Africa. In 1921, Coghlan was the leader of a delegation that was sent because of the formation of a government to London. 1922 Southern Rhodesia became a self-governing British colony settlement. A special honor was bestowed Coghlan fact that he was buried near the grave of Cecil Rhodes in Matopo Mountains.
