Charles Mayer (boxer)

Charles Mayer was an American boxer and Olympic champion in the middleweight division in 1904 and silver medalist in the heavyweight division at the same games. He is one of only five boxers in Olympic history, which competed in two weight classes.

The 3rd Summer Olympic Games in 1904 in St. Louis were the first in which championship boxing matches were held. It took only some Americans, though foreigners would have been eligible. In the middleweight only two boxers were reported, so the competition only consisted of the final, which Mayer o by K. won against Benjamin Spradley. In the heavy- weight also only three boxers were reported, with Mayer on the winner of the semifinal battle, Samuel Berger, met. His heavier by more than ten pounds of his opponents, he finally defeated on points. So he needs for his Olympic gold and silver medal only a single win.

1905 won the launching of a New York club Mayer the silver medal at the U.S. Championships in Boston and 1906 nor the bronze medal at the U.S. Championships in San Francisco.
