Carmen Barth

Carmine R. "Carmen" Barth ( * September 13, 1912 in Cleveland, † September 18, 1985 in Avon Lake ) was an American boxer and Olympic champion in the middleweight division by 1932.

Career

Carmen Barth represented his home country next to Lou salica ( flyweight ), Joseph Long ( bantamweight ), John Hines ( featherweight ), Nathan Boron (lightweight ), John Miler ( light heavyweight ) and Frederick Feary ( heavyweight), at the 10th Olympic Summer Games 1932 in Los Angeles. Although Barth had previously won any national championship he won with victories against Manuel Cruz from Mexico, Ernest Pierce from South Africa and Amado Azar from Argentina the gold medal in the middleweight division.

His professional career began after the Olympic Games and lasted until March 1941. He played 63 fights, including 44 wins and 4 draws. On February 19, 1938, he boxed in Cleveland for the world title against Freddie Steele ( Record: 123 wins - 3 losses ), but lost by TKO in the seventh round. In 1942 he was drafted into the United States Navy and ended his boxing career.
