Charles van Rooy

Charles Joan Marie Adriaan van Rooy ( born January 23, 1912 in Rotterdam, † August 1, 1996 in Hilversum ) was a Dutch politician of the CIP. From 1959 to 1961 he was the Dutch Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health and the 1964-1978 Royal Commissioner in the province of Limburg.

Van Rooy was born the son of a high school teacher. After leaving school, Van Rooy took up studies in engineering at the Technical University in Delft. A year later he moved to the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht to study law here. Finally he went to the Gemeentelijke Universiteit in Amsterdam, where he earned his degree in 1937, and in 1938 received a doctorate in law.

His first political office he assumed on 15 November 1939 as mayor of Hontenisse. After the forced dismissal by the occupying German forces on 22 January 1944, he went into hiding. Only after the liberation of the community, he was employed in November 1944 again in his office. On December 16, 1945 moved to the top of the city Etten- Leur, on 1 May 1952, he was elected Mayor of Venlo, and on May 1, 1957 Mayor of Eindhoven.

Finally, he was appointed on 19 May 1959, the Catholic Prime Minister Jan de Quay, with whom he was good friends, as Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health in his cabinet. After two years he resigned on July 3, 1961 back from his post after his plans for reform of child benefits were sharply criticized in the Second Chamber.

Van Rooy continued his career as mayor of Heerlen continues ( January 16, 1962 - January 1, 1964 ). Finally, he was employed on 1 January 1964 as Royal Commissioner in the province of Limburg and remained until his retirement on February 1, 1978 in this office.
