Chegem

Tschegem (Russian Чегем ) is a city in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino -Balkaria with 18,019 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 10 km north of the Republic capital Nalchik at the same Tschegem, a right tributary of the Baksan river system of the Terek.

Tschegem is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city is situated on the M29 highway Rostov-on- Don - Azerbaijani border, which is expanded here freeway -like.

History

The old village Tschegem Perwy (Russian for First Tschegem, to distinguish it from the nearby Tschegem Wtoroi, Second Tschegem ) received in 1972 the status of an urban-type settlement and 2000 - without the additional name - the municipal law.

In Tschegem there is a memorial museum for the Balkar poet Qaysin Quli ( Balkar Къайсын Къули, Russian Кайсын Кулиев / Kaissyn Kulijew, 1917-1985 ), who was born in the village ( aul ) Werchni Tschegem (upper Tschegem ).
