Chennai Metropolitan Area

The metropolitan region of Chennai ( engl. Chennai Metropolitan Area, CMA briefly; Tamil: சென்னை மாநகர பரப்பு ) is a metropolitan area in India. It includes the city of Chennai (Madras ), the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu and fifth largest city in India, and parts of the adjacent surrounding land. The metropolitan region of Chennai has 7,026,281 inhabitants in an area of 1,189 km ² (as of 2001). The city planning and development in the metropolitan area is coordinated by the authority Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

The metropolitan region of Chennai covers the city of Chennai as well as 16 municipalities ( municipalities ), 20 after the panchayat system managed cities (town panchayats ) and 224 villages. Besides Chennai are the largest cities Ambattur, Avadi, Tiruvottiyur, Alandur, Pallavaram and Tambaram. The metropolitan area extends over the territory of three districts: It includes the District of Chennai, which is identical with the administrative city of Chennai, as well as parts of the bordering districts of Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram.
