Cherkessk

Tscherkessk (Russian Черкесск ) is a city in southern Russia. It is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Karachay -Cherkessia and has 129 069 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Caucasus foothills in the relatively flat north of the Republic, on the right bank of the Kuban River. Situated 20 km north of the city is the boundary Karachay- Circassia to Stavropol region. The nearest towns are Ust- Dscheguta ( 16 km southwest of Tscherkessk ) and the city Newinnomyssk in the Stavropol region (47 km north).

History

The town was first founded in 1804 as one of the military bases on Russia's southern border. 1825 was the fortress the status of a Cossack Cossack village named Batalpaschinskaja ( Баталпашинская ). In the 19th century the place had only to agriculture significance, also there was a sawmill. 1880 Batalpaschinskaja circle center of the Cuban province.

In the 1930s, carried out several times a renaming of the place: In 1931, he was granted city status and was named 1931-34 Batalpaschinsk ( Баталпашинск ), 1934-37, he was named Sulimov ( Сулимов ) in honor of the Soviet state 's Daniil Sulimov. Once this has been tried and executed during the Stalinist purges, the city was named 1937-39 Jeschowo - Tscherkessk ( Ежово - Черкесск ) to the Minister of the Interior Nikolai Yezhov. After this was also convicted, the city received its present name in 1939.

Economy and Transport

Tscherkessk is primarily administrative city, industrially important are the electrical industry, leather goods and food production.

Road connections are made among other things to the trunk road on the M29 federal road A155. In Tscherkessk there is a railway station on the route from Newinnomyssk to Ust- Dscheguta. The urban public transport consists of a trolley bus network, as well as buses and route taxis.
