On February 15, 1865, the C & NW officially took over the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad, which was founded on 16 January 1836. The latter began in December 1848 with the railway construction west of Chicago. She was thus the first railroad, which began with the development of the Midwest.

The main line of this company went from Chicago to Oelwein, Iowa and divided there into line branches to Minneapolis -St. Paul, Omaha and Kansas City (Missouri ). Through a combination of Hayfield by Clarion ( Iowa ), there was also a main line between the Twin Cities and Omaha. By taking over the Northwestern gave for the first time access to Kansas City and relieved himself likewise the pressure of competition. A planned merger with the Milwaukee Road in 1970, however, did not materialize.

When the Chicago, rock Iceland & Pacific Railroad was liquidated on 31 March 1980, the North Western took over 1,300 route kilometers.
