Chipaya

Chipaya is a village in the department of Oruro in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Chipaya is the central place of the district ( bolivian: Municipio) Chipaya in the province of Atahuallpa on the Bolivian Altiplano. Chipaya lies at an altitude of 3,675 m above sea level in the estuary of the Río Lauca on the northern edge of the salt lake Salar de Coipasa.

Geography

The climate in the region is semiarid and a typical diurnal climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day be more pronounced than during all seasons.

Chipaya lies at a distance of 202 kilometers of road south-west of Oruro, the capital of the department.

From Oruro from the unpaved highway Ruta 12 via Toledo, Ancaravi and Huachacalla to Esmeralda and on about Sabaya by Pisiga on the Chilean border and Colchane in Chile.
