Atahuallpa is a province in the southwest of the Oruro Department in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Atahuallpa Province is one of 16 provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 18 ° 35 'and 19 ° 39' south latitude and between 67 ° 31 ' and 68 ° 39 ' west longitude.

It is bordered on the north by the province of Sajama, to the west by the Republic of Chile and the province of Puerto de Mejillones, in the southwest on the Potosí Department in the south east of the province Ladislao Cabrera, and the north- east by the province of Litoral. The province extends from northwest to southeast, with a length of 160 kilometers and an average width of 50 kilometers.

Population

The population of the Province of Atahuallpa has risen in the past two decades at three times:

40.7 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 92 percent of the population speak Spanish, 67 percent Aymara and Quechua 9 percent.

97.3 percent of the population have no electricity, 96.6 percent live without sanitation device ( 1992).

66.4 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 1.6 percent in mining, 4.9 percent in industry, 27.1 percent in the service sector ( 2001).

59 percent of the population is Catholic, 32 percent are Protestant (1992).

  • Municipio Chipaya - 2,849 inhabitants (Update 2010)
  • Municipio Coipasa - 874 inhabitants
  • Municipio Sabaya - 9,766 inhabitants
