History

The town was founded only on 19 October 1994 by Law No. 16,610. This specifies that the area between Arroyo Carrasco and Arroyo Pando in the judicial districts ( Secciones Judiciales ) 19 and 20 of the department of Canelones to Ciudad de la Costa are summarized. The nearby seaside resorts in the area were already grown together from the buildings here. These included: Barra de Carrasco, Shangrilá, San José de Carrasco, Lagomar, Solymar, Lomas de Solymar and El Pinar. This had evolved in the 1980s and 1990s by small fashion resorts to larger housing estates, which is why the summary was decided to a city.

Infrastructure

The economy is dominated by services. Although tourism is still dominant, but has lost to earlier in the field in importance as the urban residence character many Uruguayans could drift off to more remote holiday destinations. The population growth is still the highest of all major cities of Uruguay, which means that there are infrastructure problems.

Population

With 112 449 inhabitants ( 2011) it is the second largest city in the country.
