Features

Macroscopic characteristics

It forms individually from sociable standing up, sometimes grown together, nichtblättrige fruiting bodies. These have a typical, flattened at the apex significantly dented up ( " truncate " ) cone shape with a beaded often - puckered edge. They are yellow to ocher orange from the outside. Towards the base, the color is slightly darker and there may be a hint of purple, further wherein the stem base itself is below bright. The surface is smooth when young mushroom, but later increasingly wrinkled. The fungus is 5-11 (-15 ) cm high, reaching 2-5 (-8 ) cm in diameter. The meat is white and firm, but also flexible and tough. When cut, it turns brown reddish in the air, with potassium hydroxide (KOH ) dyes it (light) red, with iron ( II ) sulfate ( FeSO4 ) green. The meat has a sweet, mild, after prolonged chewing often bitter and smells pleasantly unobtrusive.

Microscopic characteristics

The spores are formed on the surface of the upper portion; the lower part is sterile. The spore powder is whitish yellow to ocher. You are elliptoid, smooth and hyaline, and measure 9-13 × 5-8 micrometers. Iodine solutions show at the spores no color reaction ( inamyloid ).

Artabgrenzung

Due to the typical form of the species is difficult confused. A distant similarity with the inedible tongues giant lobe ( Clavariadelphus ligula ). It occurs only in coniferous forests and a mild taste. The Hercules also inedible giant lobe ( Clavariadelphus pistillaris ) is larger, more frequent and often tastes bitter.

Ecology and phenology

It grows in coniferous forests in mycorrhizal symbiosis with the fir trees.

The fruit bodies grow from August to November singly or in small groups, only occasionally appear earlier.

Dissemination

The truncate giant mace is used in Europe and Asia, and quite rare. She is out on the Polish Red List of endangered species as an endangered species.

Importance

Ingredients

The fungus contains a medically significant isoprene -like compound. He accumulates zinc and the radioactive cesium -137.

Contained the 24,25- dihydroxy-2 -(3- hydroxy-3- methylglutaryl ) lanostanon -(3 ) (English Clavaric acid) interferes with the farnesyl protein transferase ( an enzyme involved in tumor development ), which is of therapeutic value for the treatment of certain types of cancer suggests. It resulted in animal experiments in mice, a reduction of tumor growth. Furthermore, the fungus shows antimicrobial properties.

Feed value

It is edible, because of its rarity but schonenswert and is in some places under protection.
