Clyde is a city in Callahan County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the northwest of the county, just north of the geographical center of Texas, and has a total area of 6.2 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The first settlers arrived around 1876. Why the place got this name, is not assured. Most likely, some workers of the crew of a foreman of the Texas and Pacific Railway Company named Clyde have settled here, which had only called at the time of railway construction, the Clyde.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,345 people in 1,292 households and 989 families. The population density was 540.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 96.29 % White, 0.36 % African American, 0.39 % Native American, 0.18 % Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander residents from the and 1.58 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.08% were of mixed ancestry, and 4.04 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,292 households, 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.2 % were married couples living together. 13.9% were single mothers and 23.4 % were non-families. 22.0 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.5 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 persons; the average family size amounted to 2.96.

28.7 % of the population were under 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.0 % 25 to 44, 21.8 % 45 to 64 and 17.7 % 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 86.6 males. For every 100 females aged at least 18 years 82.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,085, and the median income for a family $ 37,257. Males have a median income of $ 27,426 versus $ 22,188 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,699. 8.0 % of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 8.6 % have children under the age of 18, 6.3% 65 or older.
